We often hear about the mind-body connection associated with the causes of certain systemic diseases, but did you know that there’s a mouth-body connection associated with periodontal disease and systemic diseases.
The initiation and progression of periodontal disease requires the presence of bacterial accumulations called plaque. Plaque is a biofilm that which when left to build up cause’s inflammation in the mouth. Periodontitis results from a complex interplay between bacterial infection and host response. Research proves that mild to moderate forms affect 30% to 50% of adults and severe periodontitis affects 5% to 15% of adults. Allowing periodontal inflammation to persist increases the risk of systemic diseases which can include cardiovascular disease, Diabetes Mellitus, Respiratory disease, certain cancers and Preterm low birth weight deliveries. Other risk factors associated with periodontal disease include tobacco use, family history, stress, depression, obesity and osteoporosis.
The importance of a healthy mouth cannot be stressed enough. Through proper flossing, brushing and medicinal mouth rinses you can help prevent and/or maintain a healthy mouth. Maintaining regularly scheduled dental appointments with your dentist/hygienist is essential in the prevention and treatment of the adverse affects that plaque plays in the causes of periodontal disease and systemic diseases.
